Nile Green receives Association for Asian Studies book prize
Professor Nile Green
of the department of history has been awarded the Ananda K. Coomaraswamy Book Prize from the Association for Asian Studies for his book, "Bombay Islam: The Religious Economy of the West Indian Ocean, 1840-1915"
(Cambridge University Press, 2011). The book traces the ties between industrialization, imperialism and the production of religion in 19th-century Bombay as a thriving port city that attracted migrants from across India and beyond. In 2011, the book earned Green the Albert Hourani Book Award from the Middle East Studies Association.
Green is director of the UCLA Program on Central Asia and is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Middle East Studies.
