In her own words: Botanist Mildred Mathias of the UCLA Botanical Garden
Before she died in 1995 at age 88, Mildred Mathias, a UCLA botany professor, ardent environmental activist and trailblazer for women in science, was videotaped as she talked about her childhood, college years, family life and long career here.
She was the director of the UCLA Botanical Garden from 1956-1974 when she retired. Five years later, the garden was named after her.
Pictured: Mathias led many public tours to exotic rainforests and locations around the world to share her love of plants. She led her last tour when she was 88 to Chile.
