Day 1, 6:15 a.m.
I was shocked to see so many people so early in the morning -- 40 of us. The first week called for a dramatic retraining of our bodies and our minds. I met parts of my body that I didn't know existed, and they continued to speak to me throughout the week.
I was relieved that I didn't appear to be the only "oldie but goodie." The days were filled with warm-ups, stretches and workouts to strengthen our muscles and build stamina. The great thing was the variety of activities. If I had to face doing air squats and planks every morning at 6:15, it would take a whole lot of motivation to get me there. But there's always something new and exciting … and sometimes daunting....Sometimes this feels like tough love.

Nutrition Wednesdays are like an oasis after all those workouts. And they're fun because of Diana Carson, our teacher. I like her approach: "There is no such thing as a bad food." It's all about moderation. So far, we're taking beginning steps up the healthy food pyramid -- what to eat and how much. The how much part is a shocker. A serving of pasta or rice is 1/2 cup cooked. This is the equivalent size of a light bulb or a tennis ball. My personal challenge is to modify my usual basketball-size portion of spaghetti down to tennis ball-size.

I woke up this morning and felt that I'd hit a wall. I was tired. I was beginning to feel defeated. I promised my BHIP Buddy that I'd see her today. So I hustled on over to UCLA for class in the Pardee Gym. We start with the World's Greatest Stretch. ... That white line I have to reach across the gym staring at me. ... These warm-ups were kicking my butt.

... It wasn't so bad. We ran around the track at Drake Stadium twice — I like to run but I don't have a lot of stamina. We did our warm-ups, and they still wore me out. But they're beginning to feel like family — good for you even if they can be a little bit of a pain. I think I'm getting better at them.
Pushups are my current nemesis. I think they’re part of the reason why I started being discouraged about the workout, and why I decided to take control of my workout. Pushing up and falling down and then crawling back up into position was not working.

One major breakthrough for me is realizing that BHIP is not just about physical exercise or losing weight -- it's a whole mind-body-life health program. All of the pieces are starting to come together for me. ... Monday morning at 6:15. Drake Stadium. Overcast, yet muggy. Awake, but groggy. Around the track. World's Greatest Warm-up. Half-way through the World's Second Greatest Warm-up -- the crab walk (as we affectionately call it). I still had a hard time finishing them. But they are beginning to feel good in an odd way. ...

I listen to the talk at 6:15 am. How do we feel? Have we lost weight? Are we stronger? I can generally feel the aches and pains, but I haven't been losing weight or my clothes haven't been feeling looser. But today, my BHIP buddy told me that she could tell the difference. An unsolicited observation that made my day! ... I've learned a lot about myself this week. I've been reading “Mind Gym” and have been working from the inside out, starting with the most out-of-shape muscle — my brain, my mind, my attitude. I've started curbing the "I can't" ...
