Learning for employees just got a little easier

If you have ever taken any of the various training and development courses offered by UCLA’s Campus Human Resources (CHR), you are already familiar with SkillNet, the online training enrollment system that allows you to browse through the training catalog, enroll in classes and pay for them via departmental recharge or personal check.
 
Beginning on March 15, however, SkillNet will be replaced by something that should make the learning process even easier — the new UC Learning Center, a systemwide learning management system that will serve as a central site for enrollment and administration not only of CHR’s training program, but of other participating training organizations across campus and all compliance training as well.
 
“It gives us one point of access for all training at UCLA, not just the courses that are coordinated under CHR’s umbrella,” said Robert Gibson, CHR’s director of training and development. “Access to it will now be through a UCLA logon. So there is going to be one place where people’s training history — whatever they take through us, as well as any compliance-related courses they take — can be collected. They’ll have a comprehensive training transcript.”
 
Gibson pointed out that UCLA employees will be able to access the new UC Learning Center from anywhere in the world, not just from campus computers that are part of the UCLA network. “You can be in the Gobi Desert, as was one faculty member who e-mailed me about his compliance training! If you can get to the Internet, you can access the system,” he said.
 
Another advantage is that there is an automatic connection among UCLA’s personnel system, the campus directory database and the new UC Learning Center. When employees begin the enrollment process, they will no longer need to create a profile — that will automatically be done for them. The UC Learning Center will also allow UCLA employees to launch and track online training courses (“eCourses”); print certificates for completed courses; and submit course evaluations electronically.
 
“One thing that is important for people to know is to be sure to get their UCLA logon, if they haven’t got one already,” Gibson said. Employees may obtain their logon ID from the Bruin OnLine Help Desk or by going to https://logon.ucla.edu.
 
Effective March 15, faculty and staff will be able to access the UC Learning Center at http://lms.ucla.edu. More information about the UC Learning Center, including a help guide, is available on the Human Resources Portal at www.chr.ucla.edu.
