English Professor Eric J. Sundquist has been selected to receive the richest prize in the humanities, the Mellon Foundation's Distinguished Achievement Award, totaling $1.5 million over three years. This honor recognizes Sundquist's study of the role racial and ethnic minorities play in American literature. The first UCLA recipient of the Mellon award, Sundquist is the UCLA Foundation Professor of Literature.
Rhoda Weiss, a UCLA Extension instructor since 1984, recently became chair and chief executive officer of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the world's largest organization of communications professionals in areas such as business, government, the military and education. She will serve a one-year term as head of PRSA's 17-member board of directors and 31,000 professional and student members.
Paul Mischel, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine and a researcher at the Jonsson Cancer Center, has been selected as the 2007 Farber Award winner for excellence in neuro-oncology. The Farber Lectureship recognizes a promising new investigator who has achieved significant results early in his or her career. The honor includes an award of $10,000.
Mathematics Professor Terence Tao is the first scholar appointed to UCLA's James and Carol Collins Chair in the College of Letters and Science. Jim and Carol Collins gave the College a $1-million gift to endow this chair, which may be awarded to a professor in any of the College's more than 30 departments.
Law Professor Stephen Bainbridge has been named the William D. Warren Endowed Chair in Law, created to honor former Law School Dean William Warren. Bainbridge is a prolific scholar whose work covers a variety of subjects, with a strong emphasis on the law and economics of public corporations. He currently serves on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Markets and Morality.
