New playroom opens at Jules Stein Eye Institute

The Jules Stein Eye Institute, in cooperation with the Chase Child Life Program at Mattel Children’s Hospital, opened a new playroom to help lessen the anxieties of pediatric patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery. It's located within the main waiting room on the surgical floor. Decorated with Minnie and Mickey Mouse wall decals, the new playroom is filled with children’s books, preschool toys, puzzles, educational flash cards, and blocks, and comes equipped with a Starlight Foundation Fun Center. The mobile unit includes a Wii System, a DVD player and LCD television. Also available on a weekly basis is the Chase Child Life Program, staffed by specialists who lead family tours of the surgical area and help children, as well as their parents cope better with the surgical experience.
