Re: New Police Chief

As you may be aware, Chief Karl Ross retired at the end of June 2009. My sincere thanks to Karl for his 33 years of dedicated, loyal service to the campus, and best wishes to him for his retirement.

After an extensive and comprehensive search involving more than 100 candidates, I am pleased to announce the appointment of James Herren as the new Chief of Police, effective September 1, 2009. James Herren joins the UCLA Police Department (UCLAPD) after 32 years of law enforcement experience with the Torrance Police Department. He rose through the ranks of that department until his appointment as Chief in 1997, and he successfully served in that capacity until his retirement in 2006. As Chief, he provided leadership to a progressive police department in a city with a diverse population of 140,000 residents.

James also served as the President of the Los Angeles County Chiefs’ Association. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in Business Management from the University of Redlands, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

In order to better align UCLA Police Department with other campus emergency service units, UCLAPD is now a part of General Services under the direction of Associate Vice Chancellor Jack Powazek. The alignment of all emergency service units (Emergency Management, Environment, Health & Safety, Facilities Management, Transportation, and UCLAPD), provides significant organizational synergy and efficiency by the incorporation of all first responders into one division under a single, unified management structure.

I would like to express my thanks to the faculty, staff, and student leaders who participated in the review process for the Chief position.

Please join me in welcoming James Herren to UCLA.

Sincerely,

Sam J. Morabito
Administrative Vice Chancellor
