Teens to explore filmmaking at campus summer camps

26For the high-schooler hoping to be "discovered" by Hollywood, or the teen interested in dabbling in filmmaking, a slate of summer workshops at UCLA offers a chance to get a taste of both college life and Tinsel town.

The UCLA Arts Camps Summer Workshops, taught by professors from the School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT), also offers a 10% discount for staff and faculty families. The sessions include everything from "Acting for the Camera" to "Computer Animation," "Hip Hop Dance" and "SitCom Writing/Producing."

"It's for youth who are interested in any of these arts that we offer," said Myrl Schreibman, TFT's director of Entrepreneurial Programs and an adjunct professor teaching film and television directing and producing in the Department of Film and Television.

"Students, ages 14-20, can enroll, whether they just want to know what TFT is like, or whether they want to further their studies in a serious, professional environment with like-minded students," Shreibman said. "It's a pretty popular program. We get 800-1,000 kids every year."27

The workshops range from five days to three weeks long, generally costing $1,200 for five days and $2,000-$4,000 for longer camps. All the sessions are residential, with costs covering full room and board in the residence halls. Students go to sessions from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to be led by TFT faculty, as well as by special industry guests. Jeff Goldblum, LeVar Burton and Henry Winkler have all been guest speakers in the past.

Registration is open and continues for as long as the camps run, from June 21 through Aug. 7, but some camps are already fully booked. For more information, visit the TFT Arts Camp site or visit U.S. Performing Arts' UCLA page for a list of workshops and costs. Only one of the workshops, the Musical Theater Conservatory, requires an audition; the rest are open to all who enroll.
